Radon can impact any type of property, public or private. Radon in schools and campus settings have been overlooked for decades but that has changed
Due to increased awareness regarding the dangers of radon gas and overall Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) programs, school districts all over America are now better focused on radon hazards and committed to maintaining optimal indoor air quality to protect the health and safety of both students and staff members.
The EPA recommends radon testing as an ongoing component of any effective IAQ initiative. If radon
gas is present and exceeds the EPA threshold for safety (less than 4 pico curies per liter), radon
mitigation is necessary.
A nationwide survey of radon levels in schools estimates that nearly one in five schools have at
least one schoolroom with a short-term radon level above 4 pCi/L – the level at which EPA recommends
that schools take action to reduce the level. EPA estimates that more than seventy thousand (70,000)
schoolrooms in use today have high short-term radon levels.
